Redact a Screenshot Before Posting Online

Use a repeatable review process to remove account details, notifications, and private conversations from screenshots.

Screenshots can expose more than the intended conversation. Names in sidebars, account avatars, browser bookmarks, notification banners, and timestamps may reveal identities or routines. Review the entire screenshot before posting it to a public forum.

How to approach it

Cover sensitive areas with opaque shapes or crop them out. Do not rely on a faint highlight or a translucent brush. Export a flattened image and inspect the final file. If context is important, explain the missing information in a caption rather than leaving private details exposed.

Checks before you share

Keep an untouched source file, inspect the exported copy at full size, and confirm that the result suits its intended use. If the image contains private information, check the entire frame and its metadata before publishing.

Frequently asked question

Is cropping always enough?

It is enough only when every sensitive detail is outside the retained frame; check the final image carefully.

For a practical next step, try the Image Censor. You can also use the EXIF Remover for a related image task.
