Improve Contrast in a Dark Photo
Make a dim image easier to view while preserving shadow detail and avoiding unnatural brightening.
A dark photo may contain useful details in its shadows, but lifting every dark area equally can make the image look flat. Check the subject and background separately and decide which parts need attention.
How to approach it
Increase exposure or shadows gradually and watch for noise in darker areas. If highlights are already bright, raising exposure may wash them out. Compare the edit with the original and export a copy so the unedited image remains available.
Checks before you share
Keep an untouched source file, inspect the exported copy at full size, and confirm that the result suits its intended use. If the image contains private information, check the entire frame and its metadata before publishing.
Frequently asked question
Why does brightening reveal grain?
Dark areas often contain less signal, so increasing them also makes existing sensor noise more visible.
For a practical next step, try the Image Resizer. You can also use the Image Compressor for a related image task.
